Since 2009, it is possible for citizens to participate in European affairs through the European Citizens Initiatives. With these ECIs citizens can call upon the European Commission to act, mostly in the form of a legislative proposal. As soon as an ECI has reached 1 Million signatures, the Commission decides how to react to it.
